Outreach

Friendship Place

In May of 2011, Saint Sophia Cathedral became one of 26 faith congregations represented on the Board of Friendship Place (FP). In 2010, Saint Sophia Philoptochos began their outreach to Friendship Place, a haven for the homeless where counseling and other support is offered to the approximately 30 average number of daily visitors.  Currently, one of our members serves on the Board of Directors of  FP.  We prepare protein-rich breakfast sandwiches and a hot lunch for 30 persons which are delivered to the Friendship Place Welcome Center on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Anyone interested in helping to prepare these meals are encouraged to contact Elaine Joost at econojoost@msn.com.

Monthly Food Drive

On the 1st Sunday of each month, we conduct a food drive to collect non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies and personal toiletries. These items are delivered to Friendship Place for the homeless who visit there. For more information, please contact Mary Patterson at mkpatterson2@verizon.net.

Philoptochos 2015 Food Drives For Friendship Place

The December 2015 Food Drive vastly exceeded all expectations with a record 1,325 donations consisting of 824 food items and 501 toiletries (mostly travel size)!  This extraordinary volume brought up our average number of monthly donations for 2015 from 329 to 412.

We attribute this wonderful increase to the participation of the Daughters of Penelope, Hermione Chapter,
which conducted its own Christmas Food Drive and then combined its donations with those received from Saint Sophia parishioners on December 6th.

A heartfelt thank you to all Saint Sophians who have contributed throughout the year and a special thanks to the Daughters’ Hermione Chapter for its role in making the December Drive truly reflective of the Christmas spirit.  We wish each of you a blessed Christmas holiday!!

Orthodox Campus Ministry

Under the guidance of our Fr. Dimiti Lee and his Campus Ministry for Orthodox Christian students at American University, Philoptochos provides meals for approximately 30 students on the1st Monday of each month during the academic year. Anyone from the Cathedral Community can volunteer for this outreach by contacting either the Philoptochos President or Fr. Dimitri at the Cathedral Office, 202-333-4730.

Meals on Wheels

Volunteers from Philoptochos deliver Meals on Wheels weekly. Volunteers are needed from the community. Please contact Katherine Patterson if you can help with this important outreach.
